Well for healthy food, you have to leave spicy, fried food with lots of ghee and butter, but still tasty. That means even in the initial stage, you are ruling out almost all north Indian dishes and most of the south Indian non veg dishes.
Anyway here are few of our choices. We tried to list those dishes where you can taste the vegetables and meat rather than tasting the spice and chili.
1. Shukto – A Bengali Mixed Vegetarian Dish
It comprises of several veggies inclusive of Bitter Guard, Eggplant, Green Banana, Potato, Sweet potato, Drumsticks, White radish and Hyacinth Beans. Obviously the best Indian non spicy veg dish, basically if you have not tasted shukto, you have not tasted Indian cuisine.
2. Macher Jhol is a soupy fish curry
In it everything swims around and it’s served best with steamed rice. Bengali meal is almost incomplete without a serving of Macher Jhol. Well you can make this dish as much spicy as you can, but you can also make it just as a very low spice soup like below (the way I like it).
3. Neem Begun Bhaja
Fried brinjal with tender neem leaves. A typical Bengali winter starter. What can be better if you start your lunch with a refreshing bitter taste especially when it is so rich in medicinal value.
The green mango dal is a must have in most Bengali families during the summer time. Green mango has some very good health benefits too. The raw mango contains more Vitamin C than the half-ripe or ripe mangoes. It also contains a good amount of Vitamin B1 and B2.
5. Bhapa Ilish/Steamed Fish in Mustard Yogurt Sauce
The fish is steamed in a spicy paste of mustard, yogurt and hot green peppers.
6. Appam and beef stew- One of our favorite breakfast.
Here you have all the vegetables what you can imagine, basically boiled with very little spice..and well..still tasty!!!!
8. Khichuri…NOT KHICHDI!
You have it with some fried brinjal or fried fish/egg, or Labra (no. 7). One more reason to go to puja for this.
9. Choto Macher Chachchari
Fry with little salt and turmeric in healthy mustard oil and eat like popcorn.
Initially We thought we will list only the food not the drinks, but then we realized that in that case we have to leave out one of the most healthiest and tastiest item in Indian cuisine..so here it is
11. Aam pora sorbot
Nothing can be so refreshing after a hot summer day
12. Payesh – Rice with milk
Well may be not healthy for me like lactose intolerant, but one can not deny its food value
What else We can say the most healthiest and tastiest sweet not only in Bengali or Indian cuisine but in the world cuisine.
14. Misti Doi.
Again the best dessert in the whole world cuisine. Nothing can beat it.
Well we tried but failed to add some recipe from north-east India..We know that is a culinary gold mine but unfortunately, We aew still not very much exposed to it..
Can somebody help me to add a few healthy recipe from that region?
